Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer tutors needed to provide in home tutoring services to immigrant and refugee children living with parents who have limited English proficiency. Volunteers will meet with the children and teens in their home, with a parent or adult present and assist them with homework and other assignments. Many of the children we serve are falling behind in school as their parents don't have the language skills to help their child with their homework. This service is free to low income families who don't have transportation or access to community based tutoring programs. Though it is geared towards immigrant and refugees, we don't turn away any child who is from a low income family and in need of extra help. This is a very rewarding opportunity to play an important role in a child or teen's life. You can play a part in helping them go from frustrated student to a prepared student, excited about school and looking forward to a bright future.
You can set your own schedule and and times, though most tutoring will take place in the after school hours. We ask that you take on at least 1 student and commit to at least 1.5 hours a week. Most of the students we serve live in the South St. Louis area but we serve children through the St. Louis City and County. Practicum/Internship Opportunities
Practicum Description: While MCRC offers both clinical and research focused practicum positions, this specific practicum is likely to be approximately 80-90% Program Evaluation/Research focused tasks and report directly to Research Director. Practicum students enrolled in the practicum will have an opportunity to work primarily with two (2) Program Evaluation/SW Research projects which fall under the following categories: (a) Justice Center Collaboration (COLLAB) Project. The St. Louis Treatment Court seeks to expand its provision of screening, assessment, and linkages to post-release services and resources for adults in detention at the City’s Justice Center Jail. Our Research Team specializes in evaluating program outcomes and effectiveness, provide characteristics of participants, and program outcome. (b) Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) Program in its Adult Treatment Court will serve approximately 540 adult participants with the goals of increasing recruitment, participation, and retention of participants; and realizing positive behavioral health outcomes for those supported by PRSS in the program. The PRSS Program (funded until Sep 2027) provides recovery support to adult Treatment Court participants.
Practicum Activities:
1. Program evaluation tasks will include data collection, data management, data analysis. Students will attend court sessions to review program design & implementation. Student will deepen understanding of mental health courts, family treatment courts, best practices methods, review range of assessment tools, data collection, data management, and data analysis. Students will be encouraged to make recommendations for improvement resulting from program evaluation studies reviewed.
2. Students will provide administrative support for the Center in the form of center development activities (e.g. Lit reviews, refine surveys, prepare graphic presentations of program evaluation study results including summary spreadsheets and graphs, develop briefs, contribute to reports, etc)
This practicum provides an ideal training ground for those seeking hands on experience in social work research/ program evaluation research specifically in the areas of performance measurement, data collection, data management, data analysis, and treatment court program evaluation. Practicum will offer students the opportunity to observe drug court proceedings and learn about the criminal justice system as it relates to offenders with addictions.

- Looking for 2-4 credit for the Fall 2026 Spring Summer 2027.
- Comfort and sensitivity in working with minority populations.
